Dreaming of Spring . . . And My Garden

I should be putting together my shopping list as I've got to get out to the store today, but one of those lovely vegetable/flower catalogs came in the mail today . . . and the spring fever bug hit.

I've spent every spare moment since my kids went down for their nap pouring over the contents of that catalog (and a couple of others) . . . dreaming.

(Just click on the pictures of the catalogs to go the online versions.)

My current all time favorite is from Seed Savers Exchange. They have beautiful pictures (warning: don't peruse this catalog when you're hungry) and they only sell heirloom varieties.

I LOVE heirloom varieties . . . probably 'cause I'm cheap. Oh, and they tend to taste scrumptious. Ya see, heirloom varieties are open pollenated. Which means that I can save seeds from them and they will come back true to type (providing of course that they haven't cross-pollenated with another plant from the same family and therefore will come back as a cross of the two).

Still there are many vegatables that are self pollinating and that don't cross pollinate easily - most tomatoes and beans come quickly to mind. So all my purple podded beans that I grew last year and saved seed from will be replanted in my garden this year. And that is where the CHEAP part comes in. I don't have to continously keep buying seeds. Once I have a particular variety, if I like it, I can just save seeds. Of course, for certain vegatables this requires more work than for others. But that can be another post at a later date.

Okay, now to get some REAL work done.   : )

This Week's Shopping Trips

Last week, I didn't go shopping AT ALL. I know, I intended to go Saturday night - just so that I could pick up the FREE light bulbs, some cat food, and 1 or 2 other things . . . but we went out at 5 pm for an early dinner (Outback - had a gift card - smile). And at 8:30 when we finally sat down at a table (long story) I realized that my chances of actually getting to Rite Aid before they closed were getting slimmer and slimmer. We did have a lovely dinner and the waiter was great about making sure that we had something for the kids to snack on almost as soon as we got to the table. And if I may brag about my kids for a second: they were remarkably good for having had a short nap (I woke them up early so we could grab an early dinner.) and for not having eaten since they got up from before mentioned nap. Oh yeah, and for being 4, 2, and 1 year old. We passed Rite Aid, on our way home, at 10:02. My Rite Aid closes at 10 pm.

So, all that to say, I can't very well put up a post about last week's shopping trips now can I?

I figure this is my chance to get ahead of the game. I did get out to Rite Aid Sunday morning (1/30/11). My husband is the music leader at church. He has to be at church to open the building and get ready for music practice around 7:30 am. Sunday school doesn't start until 9 am. I used to take my boys and sit in the nursery with them for an hour and a half before Sunday school would start. But after doing that for around 2 1/2 years, they seemed to get a little bored with the nursery toys . . . hmm, I wonder why. The two that actually were supposed to STAY in the nursery were so bored with it by the time church started that they no longer were excited to be there. Then one Sunday, I had a brilliant idea, if I do say so myself.  : )  You see, Rite Aid is just down the road from our church, like 5 minutes down the road. That Rite Aid opens at 8 am. So now my Sunday mornings consist of dropping my husband off at church at 7:30, driving to Rite Aid, feeding my kids breakfast in the parking lot (pop tarts and juice boxes are their Sunday morning treat - they don't get them at ANY other time) and listening to church music, and then being ready to walk in the doors when RA opens. We spend the first few minutes looking at whatever catches the boy's interest as we walk into the store. Then it's my turn. I'll pick up whatever I have time to get. Generally that means I'm going to be following my scenarios pretty closely. If I have additional coupons and there is plenty on the shelf for other shoppers too, then I'll pick up some extras.

I've been very impressed with the managers at my regular RA stomping grounds. They are doing their best to keep their store well stocked. Two weeks ago, I mentioned to one of the shift managers a few of the products that were going to be big sellers this week and when I walked in this morning, there were packed shelves. Yes, I am very impressed! Plus, the managers at this particlar RA are super friendly and helpful.  : )  Thank you for making Rite Aid an enjoyable place to shop.

If I make it out again this week - still HAVE to make it to Giant Eagle - I'll post my other trips in this same post and bump it up to the top of the blog so it will be easy to find when there are updates.

Let me know how you do/did. If you have a great photo, I'd love to see it. You can even just email it to me at 1faithfulsteward(at)gmail(dot)com and if you give permission, I'd love to post it. Or leave a comment with the details of your trip. Have a blog, link your shopping trip below.

Rite Aid Deal and Transaction Scenarios 1/30 to 2/5

New to Rite Aid shopping? Visit the RiteAid page for more information.

All my scenarios will reflect my personal goal to either make money or at least not to have spent any at the end of the month - after I get my Single Check Rebate, Rite Aid gift cards, and/or MIR checks.

**Unless otherwise indicated, there is a limit of one single check rebate per item.

Hold onto your hat . . . or britches . . . or both, please. This is going to be another full week at Rite Aid!

I have a question for everyone. This week I changed the font color of the RA VV coupons to dark orange. Does this help you see them better (so that you know what you have to go print at a glance)? Is there a better color? Other thoughts?

Sumoku: A Challenging Math Game for Children and Adults

I ran across this blog post yesterday and found it very interesting. While my kids are too young to actually play this game yet (my oldest is 4), this will definitely be something that makes its way into our house at some point in the future.

Everything needed to play this game is zipped up in the compact, brightly colored, cone-shaped bag.

The premise of all the Sumoku games is to arrange the number tiles in a crossword-style pattern where each row and/or column adds-up to a multiple of the key number.
The key number is established at the start of each game with the roll of the die. Once the key number is established it stays the same throughout the entire game.
Each player keeps (8) eight number tiles at all times – grabbing from the extra tiles after each play.
After all the tiles are played, the player with the highest score wins.
Sounds simple, eh?

In the game we played above, our key number was (3) three.
Meredith created a column with the number combination [9][3][7] and [5].
The sum of the four numbers is 24.
Because of the positioning, Meredith also had to pay attention to the horizontal row her new column touched–in order for it to work, its sum also has to be a multiple of 3.
It had a previous number combination of [2] [4] [5] and [1].
When she added a [3] to that combination, the sum became [15], which was still a multiple of (3) three.
Whoop!

The addition practice comes in as the kids add-up each of their ongoing scores.
The multiplication practice comes in as the kids have to remember their multiplication families to know if the sum of a Sumoku is a multiple of the key number.
The division practice comes in because it doesn’t take long before the kids discover that dividing is often the fastest way to think through each of their plays.

Interested in purchasing Sumoku, Amazon has it listed at $14.99. Some Targets are also reported as having Sumoku. I'm not sure of the price at Target.

End of the Month - Print Coupons

January is almost over and as busy as it has been, it's seemed a bit slow after December. I needed the break. : ) My three boys have been sick most of January with one thing or another, so they haven't been able to go anywhere . . . which means that I haven't been able to get out as much either. My husband has been very good about watching them when he gets home from work so that I can get to the store, still this month I've really missed being with other adult friends.

The end of the month means it's time to print any coupons you may want . . .

  • Coupon sites will reset their coupons with the beginning of the month. Many will be pulled down and new ones will take their place. Check out Coupons.comRedPlum.com, and Smartsource.com to view the current coupons and print out any you want before it's too late.

It's Mega Swag Bucks Friday!

Wish there was a frequent flyer mile for surfing the web? Now there is! SWAG BUCKS are digital dollars that you earn by searching the web, and shopping at your favorite online stores. It's FREE, easy, and fun, and the PRIZES are amazing! Click here to get started!

Every Friday is Mega Swag Bucks Day, which means better odds of winning BIG Swag Bucks denominations - up to 10,000 in one search! It's completely Free and Swag bucks can be traded in for rewards such as gift cards, electronics, apparel, household goods and much more!

I love Swag Bucks because I can redeem my points for FREE Amazon gift cards (among other things). This is one way that I've reduced our household spending. I can purchase books for my son's schooling on Amazon. I can purchase diapers (used to do this - no longer need to - I get enough for FREE without Amazon). I can even purchase vacuum bags (Who ever gets coupons for these?). And the best thing about Amazon is that shipping over $25 is FREE too!!

UPDATE!! PediaSure / PediaSure SideKicks MIR

If you bought the PediaSure at Rite Aid (or somewhere else) and were planning on submitting for the MIR, make sure you read this first!!

First of all, the MIR (same one as in paper last weekend) is good on one 6 pk. of PediaSure or one 4 pk. of PediaSure SideKicks.

HOWEVER, the FINE PRINT states that the max. value can not exceed $13.99 (no problem here) and the minumum purchase can NOT BE LESS THAN $6.47 (okay - problem). If you purchased this at Rite Aid and you have a discount on your Wellness+ card, then your cost WILL BE less than the minimum purchase amount.

What to do? It's really quite simple. Return (or if you happen to be holding a raincheck for some like I am, just make sure you do it right the first time) 1 pk. and then turn around and rebuy it without using your Wellness+ card. You will get charged full price and will be able to submit for the rebate.

THE FINE PRINT ALSO STATES that you must pay by cash, check, or credit card. So make sure that you don't use a gift card to pay off the whole amount (like I generally do) and you'll be set to submit the MIR.  : )
