Rite Aid 1/31 to 2/6

A couple of notes to start with:
  1. Make sure you know RiteAid'sCouponPolicy. Print out a copy to keep with you. This will be a great help when you get a cashier, or even a manager, who doesn't know the policy.
  2. Go to Rite Aid AdPerks to watch videos and earn Rite Aid Video Value coupons. You will be able to earn a $5/$20 Rite Aid coupon, as well as a coupon for each product for which you watch a video.
  3. Print out and take additional $5/25 coupons and $5/$20 coupons with you. Remember, the $5/$20 coupon is only available after you watch enough AdPerks videos. (Rite Aid Video Values only allows you to choose to print the coupon one time. You can not go back and choose to print it again later. That being said, when you originally choose to print the coupon a print screen will pop up. On that print screen it has a place for you to type in how many times you want the page printed. I try to print out at least 20 for the month as I average using around 5 a week. NOTE that the coupon is good for 2 months. So if I have any extra I just use them the following month.)
  4. And finally, don't forget about Rite Aid's new Game of Life promotion that started 1/3/10 and runs through 2/27/10. The point of the game is to collect game pieces to win prizes. There are also specially marked game pieces redeemable for instant prizes. You can read more about the promotion at GameofLifeRulesGameofLifeGameboard, and BonusItemsEarnBonusTickets.
All my scenarios will reflect my personal goal to either make money or at least not to have spent any at the end of the month - after I get my Single Check Rebate, Rite Aid gift cards, and/or MIR checks.

**Unless otherwise indicated, there is a limit of one single check rebate per item.

End of the Month - Print Coupons

I can't believe it's almost February. For me, the fact that it is the end of the month has added significance. My son, Nathanael, was born on December 31st, so he is almost 1 month old now. Wow, time has gone by fast (time for me to take those 1 month old pictures).

The end of the month means it's time to print any coupons you may want . . .

  • Coupon sites will reset their coupons with the beginning of the month. Many will be pulled down and new ones will take their place. Check out Coupons.comRedPlum.com, and Smartsource.com to view the current coupons and print out any you want before it's too late. (NOTE: Coupons.com may reset their site over the weekend, so get there early.)

  • If you haven't finished watching the Rite Aid videos for January, you only have until midnight of the 31st to do so. Remember that these coupons do not expire until Feb. 28th, so you still have time to use them, but after the 31st you will no longer be able to earn the January coupons. And per Rite Aid's coupon policy, Rite Aid coupons can be combined with manufacturer’s coupons for even greater savings. Simply log onto RiteAidVideoValues to earn your coupons.

Toys R Us "Great Trade-In" Event

Know someone in the market for new baby items? Between 1/29 and 2/20, all Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores nationwide will be taking used cribs, car seats, high chairs, strollers, toddler beds, and other used baby items (see ToysRUs for details) in return for 25% off of a new baby item. (The event is designed to draw attention to the fact that certain used baby products can carry potential hazards, but are still in circulation.) You will be allowed to bring in items from one category and purchase an item from a different category and there is no limit on how many items you can trade-in.

Giant Eagle 1/28 to 2/3 Rolling, Rolling, Rolling . . .

Giant Eagle here we come. This appears to be a great week to go shopping, and just in time too. I'm sitting on more than $80 in CATs that expire the end of this month or the beginning of next month. So it's time to get those CATs rolling.

Also, remember this:  (Last chance before the end of the month to order prints.)

According to Giant Eagle's Facebook page, get 25 FREE 4 x 6 prints at Giant Eagle through 1/31/10. Go to GiantEaglePhotoDept (make sure that you are signed into gianteagle.com). Use promo code FREE25FB at checkout.

So, here is what I will be picking up from Giant Eagle this week. (I'm not exactly sure how much of everything I'll be getting as I haven't counted up how many coupons I have yet. . .)

4 Triscuits or Wheat Thins (pg. 1) $8/4 - $1 off instant wyb 4 = $7/4
- 4 $1/1 (1/24/SS; or $2/2 Printable) = $3/4 ($0.75/1)

Breakstone's sour cream (pg. 3) 16 oz. $5/4 ($1.25/1) - $0.55/1 (1/24/SS) = $0.15/1

5 Hellmann's mayonnaise (pg. 5) 30 oz. $5/2 ($4.49 shelf price, so $22.45/5 shelf price) -  5 $0.75/1 (IE Printable; FF Printable; and not sure, but this might be a different one Printable) = $5/5

- $5 OYNSO wyb $20 = $2.50/9 ($0.27/1)
(Somewhere out there is a $0.75/2 1/31/RP. I didn't get it. I wonder if the Red Plum in The Washington Post has that $0.75/1 coupon. That $0.75/1 coupon would make them FREE after CAT. There are also reports of $1/2 coupon values.)

10 Wishbone (pg. 5) 7 to 16 oz. $3/2 ($2.45 shelf price, so $24.50/10) - 5 $1.25/2 (1/31/RP) = $8.75/10

Below are some deals of which I will most likely not take advantage of this time, but you might like to consider:

- 4 $1/1 (1/10/SS) = $2/4 ($0.50/1)

6 Juicy Juice (pg. 4) 46 oz. $4/2 ($12/6) - 6 $1/1 (Printable - on Target website, but should be a MFC; I didn't print it.) = $6/6
- $4 OYNSO wyb $15 = $2/6 ($0.33/1)
(or if the above coupon is not a MFC - the bar code of a MFC will start with either a 5 or a 9 - then use 3 of this $1/2 (Printable) to get $5/6 after CAT = $0.83/1)

2 Kraft cheese (pg. 1) $10/5 ($2/1) - $1/2 (1/24/SS; Printable) = $3/2 ($1.50/1)

Marcal (pg. 9) 4 pk. toilet paper $2/1 - $2/1 (1/31/SS) = FREE

Pittsburgh Area - Red Plum Found in the Sunday Edition

This was news to me, but you can purchase The Washington Post ($2) at certain locations in Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas (check gas stations and local stores). AND GUESS WHAT . . . It carries Red Plum!! I'm going to assume that if it carries Red Plum, it also carries P&G!!   : )   Doing a little happy dance. Just think of what that will mean for our couponing.

If you find a location that sells The Washington Post? Let me know!

AND . . . if you go to DiscountedNewspapers and enter your zip you will be able to see what other papers are available for subscription in your area. Did you know that much of the Pittsburgh area can get the New York Times? I'm not sure what the coupons are like . . . and the price is steep ($3.75 for Sunday ed), but if it contains all the coupon inserts that we normally get in the mail and it has better and more coupons than we normally get, then it may be worth it. (Update: I was disappointed to discover that The New York Times does NOT contain ANY coupon inserts.)

Know of another newspaper that contains the coupons we normally only get in the mail? Enlighten us.

It's Your Coupon's Life

Have you ever wondered what happens to a coupon once you hand it over to the cashier at your favorite store?

Maybe you have had a cashier tell you that it is "wrong" for you to be getting stuff for free. Cashiers also seem to enjoy blaming couponers for the perceived woes of their stores. (ie. "My store is loosing money because of couponers like you.")

Or maybe you have simply had well meaning friends, family, or even strangers tell you that using too many coupons will put stores out of business.

So what does happen to that coupon once it leaves your hand? ? ?

A while back, Jenny over at SouthernSavers put together a great article on just that. Please check out what she had to say and prepare to be well educated on the lifecycle of the coupon.

Newspaper Insert Coupons for 1/31/10

These are the coupons that will show up in the local Pittsburgh paper along with their amounts. These should be for the Post Gazette. The Tribune may not have all the coupons or they may be slightly different amounts.

Don't live in Pittsburgh . . . your coupon inserts should look about the same + or - a few coupons. Again remember that the values may be different.

How Long Till This Goes Bad?

How many should I buy? I'm inevitably faced with this question (and I know a lot of you are too). I don't want to buy more than my family can use.

Such was the case again this week. Giant Eagle has Breakstone's sour cream on sale (starting Thursday) for $1.25/1 - $0.55/1 (1/24/SS - my GE doubles coupons up to $0.99) = $0.15/1. So, how long will this keep in the fridge? Can it be frozen? What's the best way to keep it from going bad? I need to answer all these questions before I can really evaluate how many I want to buy. (I must admit, up until now, I've been doing a lot by trial and error.)

In general, I either purchase as many items as I have coupons for, or I've been getting as much as I have room for, or as much as we can comfortably afford. But at $0.15/1 we could comfortably afford a LOT of sour cream and I have a lot of coupons. So back to the original question, how long will this keep before it goes bad?

Answer: It will keep around 10 to 14 days after the expiration date. And it does NOT freeze well.

StillTasty has storage information and tips on hundreds of food items. Why didn't I find this sooner? I could have used it around Christmas time with cream cheese and other things on sale. And did you know that foods kept constantly frozen at 0 degrees Fahrenheit will keep safe indefinitely. (Ok, I don't keep my freezer that cold, but it is an interesting tidbit.) I foresee frequent visits there in the future. Already my mind is swimming with times I could have used this website. . .

Walgreens 1/24 to 1/30

**If you are new to coupon shopping at Walgreens, please read this first as Walgreens has many coupon rules that you will need to be familiar with to get the best deals.**

I am going to take another week off from posting Walgreens' scenarios in an effort to catch up on some other things at home. Please check out SavingABundle for what I consider to be the best Walgreen coupon matchup on the blogs.

Rite Aid 1/24 to 1/30

This is the 1st week of February's SCRs! You should enter your remaining January receipts and then request your January check.

If you haven't requested your December check, the last day to do that is January 25th.

Current wellness coupons can be found here for household items, over the counter pain relief medication, and hair care items. And they can be found here for $4/20, electronics items, snack items, and prints. I have not included wellness coupons in my scenarios. Using them will change the scenarios below. You will need to add more fillers to your purchase to keep your OOP costs in the positive.

Walgreens Explained with Scenarios this Week ending 1/23/10

I'm not going to get to posting my own scenarios for Walgreens this week - just too busy. Check out Be Frugal, Be Happy, Save a Bundle!: Walgreens 1/17 to 1/23: How Low Can You Go?.

I've posted Walgreens' coupon rules below for those of you who need a refresher.

Some things to remember about Walgreens:
1. Walgreens uses Register Rewards. Register Rewards are coupons that print at the register when you buy qualifying products. Register Rewards can be used almost like cash to purchase more items at Walgreens. Register Rewards are good only for about 2 weeks from the time they are printed. If your purchase total is $2.98 before taxes, you will not be able to use your $3 RR on it. You must add something to your purchase to bring your pre-tax total equal to or above $3 in order to be able to use a $3 RR.
2. There is no limit on how many items (that produce a RR) you can buy. However, the RR will only print once per transaction. So if purchasing contact solution produces a $7 RR, you will not get 2 $7 RRs if you purchase 2 contact solutions in the same transaction, but only 1. If you purchase 2 contact solutions in 2 separate transactions, the RR will print once per transaction, netting you $14 in RRs.
3. Register Rewards cannot be rolled on like items. In other words, in the example above with the contact solution, you could not use the $7 RR from the first transaction to pay for the contact solution in the second transaction. You would either need to pay OOP for the second transaction or use a RR earned on a different purchase. You also could not use a RR earned on Huggies diapers to pay for Huggies wipes and expect another RR to print. Even though the items purchased are different, the manufacturer is the same and therefore the additional RR will not print.
4. You can stack 1 manufacturer’s coupon, 1 Walgreens’ in-ad coupon, and 1 Walgreens’ booklet coupon all on the same item.
5. Walgreens has a rule that you cannot use more manufacturers’ coupons than items you are purchasing. So for example: You want to buy 1 contact solution and 1 Huggies diaper package = 2 items. You have 1 manufacturer’s coupon for each and you have 1 Walgreens’ coupon for each. You are going to pay with cash. This transaction will work fine, since you are purchasing 2 items and have only 2 manufacturer’s coupons. But let’s say that you want to use 1 RR to pay for the items. RRs count as a manufacturer’s coupon. Now you have 2 items and you are using 3 manufacturer’s coupons on them. When you try to do this, the register will beep at you and you will be unable to use your 3rd manufacturer’s coupon/RR. To be able to use your RR on this transaction, you will need to add a filler item. (You can use more than 1 RR on a transaction, and in our example using 2 RRs you would then need 2 filler items.)
6. Filler items are items that you add to your purchase to be able to use all your manufacturer’s coupons and RRs. On the above purchase you would need to add 1 filler item (something really cheap) to bring the number of items you are purchasing up to three. You could then use the 2 manufacturers’ coupons and 1 RR (= three manufacturers’ coupons) on your transaction. It is okay to use a Walgreens’ coupon on your filler item as these do not count toward your manufacturers’ coupon total.
7. Coupon order is very important at Walgreens. If you hand your coupons to the cashier in the wrong order it can cause certain coupons not to scan, and therefore be rejected. The basic rule to remember is to hand over any $/$$ coupons first, then all manufactures’ coupons, followed by Walgreens’ coupons, and finally Register Rewards.

CVS 1/17 to 1/23

I do not regularly shop at CVS. It is farther from my home than either Rite Aid or Walgreens, and with the responsibilities of home and family, I must choose to ignore a store. At this time, that store is CVS. However, I know that for some of you CVS is more convenient. Therefore, I've asked a good friend of mine (who is a regular CVS shopper) if I can share her weekly scenarios with you. She very graciously agreed.

Interested in tracking your spending with me? Refer to my original post. http://1faithfulsteward.blogspot.com/2010/01/keep.html

Ever had one of those weeks when it seems that all the best made plans go haywire. Well, I had plans to get a lot done . . . and then . . . the kids brought me back to reality. Isaiah, my 3 year old, keeps me hopping. Just one day last week involved getting playdough out of the carpet, a full bowl of soup out of one's lap, and mopping up a bathroom floor that looked more like a swimming pool.    . . . I only made it to Rite Aid last week, late Saturday night. . . and I didn't get any pictures of my purchases.   : )`
